Dance Bag Essentials: What Every Dancer Should Keep in Her Bag
The Ultimate Dance Bag Essentials Checklist
A good dance bag is basically your personal emergency department, beauty counter, charging station, and backup plan all in one. There are several items that are considered Dance Bag Essentials you should always have.

Whether you're heading to a regular shift, working a long night, traveling between venues, or just don't like being caught unprepared, having the right things packed can make your night a whole lot easier.
You don't necessarily need to carry your entire house with you. The goal is to have the small essentials that can save you when something goes wrong.
Here's what we recommend keeping in your dance bag.
1. Water Bottle
First things first: bring water.
Long shifts, dancing, walking around the venue, getting ready, and simply being on your feet can make it easy to forget to hydrate.
A reusable water bottle gives you something you can actually keep with you and refill when needed.
Dance bag tip: Choose a bottle with a secure lid that won't randomly open inside your bag.
2. Cash & Small Bills
Cash is one of those things that's better to have before you need it.
Keep some smaller bills in your bag rather than relying completely on cards or digital payments.
You may need cash for tipping, transportation, food, parking, vending machines, or other unexpected situations.
Just make sure you're storing it somewhere secure and separate from the money you're actively working with.
Pro tip: A small zippered pouch can keep your cash organized instead of letting it disappear into the bottom of your bag.
3. Portable Charger
A dead phone in the middle of a shift is more than annoying.
Your phone may be your way to communicate, arrange transportation, check messages, handle payments, or get home safely.
Keep a portable charger and charging cable in your dance bag so you're not hunting for an outlet when your battery hits 3%.
If you use your phone heavily during work, this is one of those items that should basically live in your bag.
4. Wipes
Wipes are a dance bag staple.
They're useful for quick freshening up throughout the night, cleaning your hands, wiping down small messes, or handling those little situations where you just need to feel refreshed.
Look for wipes that are appropriate for the area you're using them on.
Important: Not every wipe is meant for intimate areas. Avoid using fragranced products internally or on sensitive areas where they can cause irritation.
5. Deodorant
You don't need a huge bottle taking up half your bag.
A travel-size deodorant is perfect for quick touch-ups before or during your shift.
It's especially useful if you're working long hours or moving around a lot.
Think of it as one of those "I'd rather have it and not need it" items.
6. Lip Gloss
Your dance bag should have at least one beauty item that makes you feel put together in approximately 10 seconds.
For us?
Lip gloss.
A quick gloss touch-up can make you feel instantly more polished without needing to redo your entire makeup look.
Keep one in your makeup pouch and you're good to go.
7. Hair Ties & Brush
Hair has a way of becoming a problem at the worst possible time.
Pack:
Hair ties
Scrunchies
Small brush
Comb
Bobby pins if you use them
Even if you walk into your shift with your hair perfectly styled, having backup options means you're prepared when your hairstyle starts fighting back.
8. Touch-Up Makeup
You don't need your entire makeup collection.
Build a small touch-up kit with the products you actually use.
Depending on your routine, that might include:
Lip gloss
Lip liner
Concealer
Powder
Blotting papers
Mascara
Small mirror
Makeup sponge
The goal is maintenance—not carrying your entire vanity around the city.
9. Emergency Kit
This is the little kit that you hope you don't need but will be very happy you packed when you do.
Consider keeping:
Band-aids
Hair pins
Small scissors
Safety pins
Stain remover pen
Pain reliever
Tissues
Mini sewing kit
Feminine hygiene products (tampons etc)
You can keep everything together in a small zippered pouch so you aren't digging through your entire dance bag looking for one Band-Aid.
10. Backup Underwear
Let's just say it:
Things happen.
A spare pair of underwear takes up almost no room and can save you from a very uncomfortable situation.
Keep them in a small pouch so they're clean and protected inside your bag.
This is especially helpful during long shifts or nights when you're changing outfits.
11. Fishnets & Other Outfit Backups
If fishnets are part of your regular look, having a backup pair is smart.
They're small enough to pack and can be replaced quickly if yours tear, snag, or otherwise decide they're done for the evening.
You can also keep other small outfit backups depending on your usual wardrobe:
Stockings
Tights
Pasties
Extra straps
Garters
Costume jewelry
Body tape
You don't need duplicates of everything.
Just think about the items that would completely ruin your night if they broke or disappeared.
Those are the things worth backing up.
12. An Extra Outfit
This is especially useful for dancers who work long shifts or move between venues.
An extra outfit doesn't have to be a complete second wardrobe.
Think:
One simple backup look that you know works.
Fold it into a small drawstring bag or packing cube so it stays organized and doesn't take over your entire dance bag.
13. Keys
Your keys deserve their own spot.
Nothing is worse than digging through a giant bag at the end of the night while you're tired and ready to go home.
A small keychain or designated interior pocket keeps them easy to find.
Make it a rule: keys always go in the same place.
What About Food?
Depending on your shift and venue, you may also want a couple of easy snacks.
Choose something that's convenient and won't make a mess inside your bag.
Some options:
Protein bars
Crackers
Fruit snacks
Nuts
Trail mix
Granola bars
And of course, keep drinking water throughout your shift.
How to Organize Your Dance Bag
The easiest way to keep your bag from becoming a black hole is to create mini categories.
Beauty Pouch
Makeup, gloss, deodorant, hair ties, brush.
Emergency Pouch
Band-aids, safety pins, stain remover, feminine products, small sewing supplies.
Clothing Pouch
Backup underwear, fishnets, extra outfit pieces.
Tech
Portable charger + charging cable.
Personal
Keys, cash, ID, and anything else you need to keep secure.
This makes it much easier to grab what you need without dumping the entire contents of your bag onto the floor.
Your Dance Bag Should Have a Purpose
You don't need to pack every possible thing you might need.
Instead, ask yourself:
"What would I be mad at myself for not bringing?"
Those are your essentials.
Your dance bag should make your night easier, not feel like you're carrying luggage.
Start with the basics:
Water. Cash. Charger. Wipes. Deodorant. Beauty essentials. Backup underwear. Emergency supplies. Outfit backups. Keys.
Everything else can be customized around your personal routine.
Because prepared girls really do have better nights.
